The Victory Tests

Mark Rowe, author of The Victory Tests which we publish later this month, will bespeaking to Needwood cricket society (Sept 22), Edgbaston (Oct 19), Nottingham (Nov 25) and Wombwell (Jan 13).

Observer review for The Rebel Tours

The Rebel Tours received a great review by Giles Richards in today's Observer (Nov 22 2009). It stated "Distasteful, unpleasant and a stain on cricket's reputation as the tours were, it's absolutely right that Peter May's book ensures they are not forgotten ... a book which is fascinating, well-written and an essential addition to cricketing literature.

Twittered by Bumble

David Lloyd, ex-England cricketer, now a commentator on Sky and better known throughout the cricket world as 'Bumble', has 'twittered' Peter May's 'The Rebel Tours – Cricket's Crisis of Conscience'. We will not pretend at SportsBooks' mansions that we are entirely sure what Twittering is but it was very nice of him to mention the book.

You can also find out about the book at http://therebeltours.wordpress.com/

We've got two signings at Watersone's to announce.

The first is at the Cirencester store on November 11 when Paul Cooper will be signing copies of 'Chapped Legs and Punctured Balls' his nostalgic look at playing football in the playground and parks when growing up in north Devon in the 1960s.

The second is at Waterstone's in Bold Street, Liverpool, on November 28. On the eve of the Everton v Liverppool derby, David Cregeen and Jonathan Mumford will be signing copies of their book 'Tales from the Gwladys Street'. Jonathan is quite excited because the event is part of Waterstone's birthday bash and the first signing session is Gok Wan's in the morning! Then comes Simon Hughes, a Liverpool FC author, and finally David and Jonathan. 'Won't that mean two sets of supporters possibly coming together?' SportsBooks asked. 'Might be some good banter,' was the reply. Oh well, they know best!

The authors at a signing at the Bluekipper lounge on October 31. Jonathan is on the left, David on the right.

Frankfurt was very busy

Normally at the Frankfurt Bookfair we at SportsBooks settle into a steady trickle of meetings. Sports books do not normally travel well overseas and Frankfurt is essentially a foreign rights fair as well as a chance to network and be seen. So we were astonished when more than 50 publishers from across the world showed interest in our World Cup book. We shouldn't have been surprised, of course, because German Aczel's wonderful caricatures provide a unqiue insight into the history of the competition and the many characters who have illuminated it.

This is German on the SportsBooks stand at Frankfurt explaining all about the book to the model he made of the legendary Pele. He told him it would be an all-colour A4 hardback.

You can see the cover below, but if you want to get a better flavour of the book you can download this pdf. It's not too big – about 360kb.

World Cup book

Finn McCool’s Football Club, written by Northern Ireland journalist Stephen Rea who settled in New Orleans with his American wife, will be published in September. It’s about his search for a place to play football. He ended up in Finn McCool’s bar where even Rangers and Celtic supporters mix amicably. The team was gelling well when Hurricane Katrina struck. The result is a set of hilarious characters who overcome the tragedy of one of the US’s greatest disasters.
What we discovered after agreeing to publish the book is that Stephen is a Chelsea fan. Of course we wouldn't have let that affect our judgement! To prove his credentials to be a member of the Shed (is there even a Shed at Stamford Bridge anymore?) Stephen got himself pictured with Chelsea and England captain John Terry. For those who don't know about these things, Terry is in the predominantly white shirt.

Sporting Justice

The Times have been very kind to Sporting Justice. In the sports pages Simon Barnes wrote: "I have a fine book on my desk: Sporting Justice: 101 Sporting Encounters with the Law, by legal standards racily put together by Ian Hewitt, a lawyer who was involved with the foundation of the FA Premier League. This book is a treasure trove of human folly."
While in the law pages Edward Fennell said: "Still looking for that elusive present to give the lawyer in your life? I can heartily endorse Sporting Justice — 101 Sporting Encounters with the Law (Sportsbooks) written by Ian Hewitt, retired Freshfields partner, and just out in time for the festivities.
...Complete with glittering legal analysis and stories from golf to motor and horse racing this is a thoroughly entertaining legal book to fall asleep over after dinner."

The Lion and the Eagle

Good review from Nick Clarke in the Indepedent.
The book is an absorbing account of the build-up to, and climax of, that meeting and is as much a tale of the turmoil of an era as it is of boxing. Packed with charming detail and atmosphere it is a primer into the brutality of bare-knuckle prizefighting and should be enjoyed by fight fans and non-fans alike.
US boxing websites have taken to the book as well. http://myboxingfans.com/2009/03/the-lion-and-the-eagle/

Modern Football is Rubbish

Good to see a great review in FourFourTwo magazine.
Jon Crampin said: "Poignant and thought-provoking book... it strikes just the right tone throughout, somewhere between gentle nostalgia and constructive criticism; has many laugh-out-loud moments yet poses some serious questions..."

George Lohmann: Pioneer Professional

Good to see in The Time's book pages of September 20 that Geoff Boycott has been reading 'George Lohmann: Pioneer Professional' which won the Cricket Society's book of the year for 2008. Sir Geoff also included the great Surrey bowler in his best-ever XI... a book that has just been published.

The World at their Feet

Malcolm Brodie in the Belfast Telegraph could not have been kinder to Ronnie Hanna's account of Northern Ireland at the World Cup in Sweden. Some of what he said is on the book's page.

Ronnie's book also got a glowing review in the programme for the Northern Ireland v San Marino match. Cunningham Peacock, the writer of the piece, said: "To say I recommend this book is an understatement."

Tie me to the Mast

Andrew Baker in the Daily Telegraph liked David Johnson's book, saying: " ...funny, sharp, sometimes startlingly personal, and deserves an audience far beyond the Potteries."
The Stoke Sentinel reviewer wrote: "It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud at something, but I did several times while reading it... The book lets you delve into the thoughts of a man in his forties, on the feeling of being a father, a husband, a friend and a football fan."

Shergar & other friends

Got very good reviews in the Daily Telegraph and Observer.
In the Telegraph Andrew Baker said: "... well worth the attention of racing fans with a literary bent ... Anderson has a good eye, a good ear, a sound grasp of structure and rhyme-scheme, and, most importantly of all, first-hand knowledge of, and love for, thoroughbred racehorses.
charming anthology... great entertainment."

While the Observer said that if you "know a racing nut with a soft spot for light-hearted, informative, horse-related poetry then, blimey, you've struck gold."
