Great Year for Athletics
This year promises to be a great year for athletics in the UK.
The World Championships will be staged at the 2012 Olympic stadium in London, the first time the UK has held the event.
It will be interesting to see the attendances. British fans tend to turn up in huge numbers for major sporting events – look at the 2012 Games and the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
But will it be a different audience than for London 2012. Then an athletics loving friend told me that from his seats near the VIP section most people seemed more interested in taking photos of the famous than what was happening on the track.
Another friend told me he’d taken his son to see the men’s 100 metres final. I didn’t know he followed athletics, I said. He didn’t, he replied. It was his first track meet.
Let’s hope that this time genuine fans get first chance to buy the tickets.
And, whether you go to the World Championships or not, your appreciation of them will be enhanced by Athletics 2017 – the latest International Track and Field annual, which we at SportsBooks are busy putting together.
